About Token Counter
Token Counter is a free, private, browser-based tool for estimating token counts across all major AI language models. Whether you're using GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, or open-source models like Llama and Qwen — we help you understand how many tokens your text will consume before you send it to an API.
Why We Built This
As AI adoption exploded, we noticed a gap: most token counters are either tied to specific providers (OpenAI's tokenizer only works for OpenAI), over-engineered with confusing UIs, or require accounts to use. We wanted something dead-simple — paste text, pick a model, get your count. No signup, no servers, no fuss.
How It Works
- Paste or type your text into the input area
- Select your model from the dropdown. We support GPT-4o, GPT-4, GPT-3.5, Claude 3.5 Sonnet/Opus, Claude 3 Haiku, Gemini 1.5 Pro/Flash, DeepSeek V3, Llama 3, Qwen 2.5, and Mixtral
- Get instant results — token count, word count, character count, context window usage, and estimated API cost
- Compare models to see how different tokenizers handle the same text
Accuracy
Our estimation uses proven approximation algorithms based on the 4-character rule, adjusted for punctuation, number clusters, uppercase sequences, and code patterns. Results are typically within 5-10% accuracy for English text. For production use requiring exact counts, we recommend using your model's official tokenizer.
